ESP Print 3.2.4
Pre-Installation Notes
UPGRADING FROM PREVIOUS VERSIONS
Due to many changes and improvements in the way the ESP Print drivers
work, you must re-add all printers after upgrading to ESP Print 3.2.
Also, support for the Tektronix 4693DX and Fargo Pictura 310(e) printers
has been dropped due to lack of interest. If you are using one of these
printers, please do *not* upgrade, as the old drivers will be removed
when you install the new version.
FONTS
ESP Print uses the Display PostScript and Showcase fonts for the GNU
GhostScript RIP. These fonts are provided on your IRIX Operating System
and Applications CD-ROMs in:
dps_eoe.sw.dpsfonts
x_eoe.sw.Xfonts
showcase.sw.fonts
ADDING PRINTERS
You must use the AddPrinter utility included with ESP Print to add
printers to your workstation. The driver information files have been
revamped for better functionality and will no longer show up within the
SGI Printer Manager. Once added, you may use the SGI Printer Manager
program for normal day-to-day operations.
REMOTE ETHERTALK PRINTING
Remote EtherTalk printing functionality is provided via a freeware package
called CAP. Due to restrictions in the software license for CAP, we are
unable to provide a copy with this distribution. To get your free copy
of CAP from the Internet, go to:
http://www.proximity.com.au/~tom/cap.html
REMOTE WINDOWS PRINTING
Remote Windows printing functionality is provided via a freeware package
called SAMBA. A copy of this package is included on the installation
CD-ROM as well as on our WWW site.
The distribution is based on SAMBA 1.9.6p11 and automatically shares home
directories and printers with PCs using the Microsoft Client and TCP/IP
software. For additional information concerning SAMBA, see the file
"/usr/local/samba/docs/samba.faq".
PRINTERS WITH BI-DIRECTIONAL PARALLEL INTERFACES
Many new printers are coming with bi-directional (IEEE-1284) parallel
interfaces. These include the new Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 600 and 800
series printers, the HP LaserJet 5 series printers, and the EPSON Stylus
Color printers.
These printers are only compatible with your SGI workstation if:
1. You use an IEEE-1284 compliant parallel cable. Most older cables
are not compliant.
2. You disable bi-directional functions on the printer. This is
available on the HP LaserJet 5 series printers via the front/top
control panel under the parallel interface configuration menu.
The ESP Print installs a small startup script that is run when your
system boots that resets each parallel port. This ensures that your
printer's parallel interface is set to "Centronics" mode.
NON-SUPPORTED PRINTERS
Although we try to support every printer in the universe, there are some
printers that are currently unsupported:
1. Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 820Cse and 820Cxi - not supported due to
proprietary Microsoft« printing system interface.
2. Brother HL-720 - not supported due to proprietary Microsoft printing
system interface.
3. Brother MFC-4550 - not supported due to proprietary Microsoft
printing system interface.
4. Canon LBP-465 - not supported due to proprietary Microsoft
printing system interface.
4. QMS Magicolor WX - not supported due to proprietary Microsoft
printing system interface.
5. Fargo Pictura 310, 310e - not supported for hardware reliability
and maintenance reasons.
